Freestyle Mandarin Learning

By Michael ‘Mickey’ Finn @ WIEChina I had just graduated university with a master’s degree in Journalism and absolutely no job prospects, like many other people in my situation. Since I’m Irish, I might as well keep up with tradition and emigrate to a bigger country with more opportunities. Most of my peers would venture to Canada, Australia or England; places with very mild culture shock and slightly inferior butter, but I didn’t want to have to land on the ground risking my money on the chance that I might get a job. Both of my older sisters have lived abroad, one in Korea and the other in Spain, and taught there as ESL teachers. Having already gotten my TEFL over the summer before graduation, I just needed to search endlessly for positions in Asia that weren’t scams, eventually settling for Guangzhou. They both had an advantage in their respective countries; one studied Spanish in school and the Korean Hangul system actually makes sense, unlike Chinese which is ...

2nd Guangzhou Educational Foreign Expert Welfare Teaching [love]

图片
Written by David @ @WIEChina No kids have received more sympathy and discrimination than the disable kids in China. Nothing can be compared for showing love to those who need. However, the disable kids need help, not pity. It is a challenge for a normal teacher rarely spent time together with special-need kids to resist showing them pity at the first time. As we know special-need kids need more care and therefore WIEChina teachers spent one-month time to prepare before the first welfare teaching trip was made. According to the research, 4.5% of disable students are not able to receive higher education in Guangzhou, because there are not enough special-need schools for them. It is the time to do something, and we know it. After one-month constant contacting with Guangzhou Rehabilitation School, we have learned some basic information about the students: there will be 18 kids joining our class, and most of them are around 10 years old. These kids don’t really prefer to be t...

Written by Matt @ WIEChina #ESL #Guangzhou #Roadmap #Summary Recently , we have shared a couple of methods about how to integrate different elements into your teaching, and how to use different methods to level up your teaching. I have to admit that the posts are bit of lengthy, though probably of help. Links can be found below: l   Integrated Teaching for ESL Teachers l   Two Effective Methods to Level Up Your Teaching For now, we have talked about elements in teaching, teaching methodology, point system, and some activities, but the interrelation among different parts is barely touched. In this post, I’ll sum up what topics we have covered and also will try my best to structuralize a bit about our sharing. It’s for the purpose of showing you all a clear roadmap about the interrelation amongst different parts. Though the diagram is self-explanatory, just in case some parts are not clear enough. Cor...

Scams you should watch out for in China[Living]

图片
Written by Luke @WIEChina Dear incoming ESL Teachers, I believe you are all very excited right now to teach in China, but ask yourself, how much do you actually know about China? How are you going to protect yourself if you do not know anything about the society? If you want to protect yourself in a foreign country, then my article would be very helpful. China has the biggest population in the world, so the competition here is very intensive; a lot of people end up doing inappropriate things in order to gain access to quick money, and scamming is one of the easiest ways for them to achieve their goal. It is true that the salary of foreign ESL teachers earn is very decent compare to most Chinese people, so trust me, the scammers are ready for you, and I want you to be ready for them. I am going to show some classic examples of Chinese scamming tricks; they might not be effective to Chinese anymore, and I hope they do not work well on you either after reading this article. Scam No...
